Jesus looks down from above, accompanied by Mary and John the Baptist. At the bottom, the devil is heaving a new soul into hell. The angel who takes the good souls to heaven is watching the devil in horror. Saint Peter, standing at the gates of heaven, is also staring at the gate to hell. Have you noticed that they all have strange, bulging eyes? Then again, I suppose you would look pretty surprised if you witnessed what they are witnessing.
Those big dark eyes may look rather odd, but they are actually quite handy. We don't know who drew the illustrations for this book, because there is no name on the drawings. But all of the figures in the book have the same big dark eyes, so the artist was given the nickname the ‘Master of the Dark Eyes’. If we see the same style of drawing eyes in other books, we can be pretty sure that the illustrations were drawn by the ‘Master of the Dark Eyes’ or someone who worked closely with him (or her?).
